August: The Leadership Month That Determines Everything

Most people think January is the month of new beginnings.

Leaders know it's August.

Whether you're leading a school district, business, nonprofit, healthcare organization, government agency, or a small team, August is the month when culture is established, expectations are clarified, relationships are strengthened, and momentum begins. What leaders intentionally do during this month often determines whether their organization simply survives the coming year—or thrives.

The best leaders don't spend August checking boxes.

They build people.

Because when people grow, organizations grow.

Here are three intentional ways exceptional leaders use August to move their teams to the next level.

1. They Invest in Relationships Before Results

High-performing organizations aren't built on organizational charts.

They're built on trust.

Outstanding leaders understand that before asking people to accomplish great things together, they must first connect with one another. August is the perfect opportunity to strengthen relationships through meaningful conversations, listening sessions, team-building activities, and simply being present.

People don't give their best effort because of a strategic plan.

They give their best effort because they trust the people they work with.

Ask Yourself:

  • Who on my team needs encouragement?

  • Who haven't I connected with recently?

  • What conversations will build trust before challenges arise?

RLR Principle:
Relationships are the first ship that carries every successful organization.

2. They Create Crystal-Clear Expectations

Confusion is expensive.

Great leaders don't assume everyone understands the mission, priorities, or standards. They use August to clearly communicate the "why," define success, and align everyone around a shared vision.

When expectations are clear:

  • Accountability becomes easier.

  • Decision-making becomes faster.

  • People become more confident because they know what success looks like.

High-performing teams rarely lack talent.

They often lack clarity.

Ask Yourself:

  • Does every team member know our top priorities?

  • Can everyone explain our mission in their own words?

  • Have I communicated expectations clearly enough that no one has to guess?

RLR Principle:
Leadership provides direction long before it provides answers.

3. They Develop Leaders—Not Just Employees

Exceptional organizations never depend on one leader.

They intentionally build more leaders.

August is an ideal time to identify emerging leaders, delegate meaningful responsibility, encourage innovation, and provide coaching that helps others grow.

Leadership development isn't something you do when you have extra time.

It's one of the reasons you'll eventually have a stronger organization.

Every conversation is an opportunity to mentor.

Every meeting is an opportunity to develop leadership capacity.

Every challenge is an opportunity to grow someone else's confidence.

Ask Yourself:

  • Who am I intentionally developing?

  • Who could lead if I were unavailable tomorrow?

  • What opportunities can I create for others to grow this month?

RLR Principle:
The greatest measure of leadership is not what you accomplish, but what your people become.

Final Thought

The organizations that finish the year strong usually begin it intentionally.

August isn't about getting ready.

It's about getting better.

Culture doesn't happen accidentally.

Trust doesn't happen automatically.

Leadership doesn't happen occasionally.

It happens through intentional daily actions that help people feel connected, valued, challenged, and inspired.

As you begin this new season, remember the RLR philosophy:

Relationships create trust.
Leadership creates direction.
Partnerships create impact.

Master these three ships, and your team won't simply have a successful year—they'll become the kind of organization people want to join, stay with, and help succeed.

Here's to an August filled with purpose, intentional leadership, and lasting impact.

Serve. Support. Help Leaders and Their Organizations.

Who's In Your Inner Circle?

Who's In Your Inner Circle?
RLR Leadership Consulting and The CORE Project

Think about the people closest to you. The ones you share ideas with, lean on for support, and let influence your decisions. That group—your inner circle—shapes how you see yourself, the choices you make, and even the risks you’re willing to take.

Sometimes, those relationships give you energy and push you forward. Other times, they hold you back. That’s why RLR Leadership Consulting and The CORE Project have teamed up to create Your Inner Circle—an opportunity to pause, reflect, and intentionally shape the connections that matter most.

In this experience, you’ll:

  • Identify who truly belongs in your circle

  • Learn how to set healthy boundaries when needed

  • Build trust that actually lasts

  • Choose connections that make you stronger

Because the truth is, leadership isn’t just about strategy or skills—it’s about people. And the people closest to you can either empower your growth or limit your potential.

We’d love for you to join us. As a special opportunity, use code Randy15 for a discounted price—but hurry, this offer won’t last long.
