Culture is What You Reinforce

Every organization has a culture. The question is whether that culture reflects the values and expectations its leaders say are important.

Culture is not defined by a mission statement hanging on the wall or the words we share at the beginning of the year. Culture is revealed in our everyday actions—how we treat people, how we respond to challenges, how we make decisions, and what we consistently recognize, reward, or allow.

Culture is what we reinforce, both intentionally and unintentionally.

If teamwork matters, we must recognize collaboration. If relationships matter, we must make time to listen and connect. If accountability matters, we must establish clear expectations and address concerns when they arise. And if people matter, our actions must demonstrate that their contributions, growth, and well-being are valued.

Here is where leadership makes all the difference. When we overlook negative behaviors because someone produces results, we send a message. When we apply expectations inconsistently, people notice. When we celebrate progress, recognize effort, and address difficult situations with respect, we reinforce the culture we want to build.

The reality is that what leaders tolerate today often becomes tomorrow's expectation. We cannot expect a positive, productive culture if our daily actions contradict our stated values.

Building a strong culture requires consistency, courage, and commitment. It also requires recognizing that accountability and support belong together. People need clear expectations, honest feedback, and opportunities to grow. Our responsibility as leaders is to create an environment where people feel supported while understanding that their actions and contributions matter.

As you reflect on your organization, ask yourself: What behaviors am I reinforcing? What am I allowing that may be undermining our culture? And what can I do differently to help our team become stronger?

Three Actions to Put Into Practice:

Recognize what is right. Celebrate the behaviors that reflect your organization's values.

Address what is wrong. Have respectful, direct conversations when actions undermine team expectations.

Model what matters. Demonstrate the values, accountability, and commitment you expect from others.

Culture is built one interaction, one decision, and one expectation at a time. Every leader has an opportunity to shape it.

Lead intentionally. Reinforce what matters. Help people become the best version of themselves.

Who's In Your Inner Circle?

Who's In Your Inner Circle?
RLR Leadership Consulting and The CORE Project

Think about the people closest to you. The ones you share ideas with, lean on for support, and let influence your decisions. That group—your inner circle—shapes how you see yourself, the choices you make, and even the risks you’re willing to take.

Sometimes, those relationships give you energy and push you forward. Other times, they hold you back. That’s why RLR Leadership Consulting and The CORE Project have teamed up to create Your Inner Circle—an opportunity to pause, reflect, and intentionally shape the connections that matter most.

In this experience, you’ll:

Identify who truly belongs in your circle

Learn how to set healthy boundaries when needed

Build trust that actually lasts

Choose connections that make you stronger

Because the truth is, leadership isn’t just about strategy or skills—it’s about people. And the people closest to you can either empower your growth or limit your potential.

Your circle matters. Choose it wisely.
