Tackling Difficult Conversations

The Power of Staying Patient

I'm not very patient. That's a fact. I want things done quickly and correctly. And I don't have much patience when things aren't done efficiently and effectively.

In a world that celebrates speed, quick wins, and immediate results, patience can sometimes feel like a forgotten leadership skill. Yet some of the most meaningful growth, strongest relationships, and greatest accomplishments are built slowly over time. Whether in leadership, education, parenting, coaching, or personal growth, patience is often the difference between reacting emotionally and responding wisely.

Patience does not mean being passive. It means remaining steady, focused, and intentional even when progress feels slow or challenges arise. Strong leaders understand that people develop at different rates, trust takes time to build, and meaningful change rarely happens overnight. The most effective leaders are often those who can stay calm in difficult moments, maintain perspective during uncertainty, and continue investing in people long before the results become visible.

In schools and organizations, patience is tested daily. There are difficult conversations, setbacks, delays, and moments when it feels easier to force outcomes rather than trust the process. But patience creates space for listening, understanding, and growth. It allows leaders to respond thoughtfully instead of emotionally. It strengthens relationships because people feel heard rather than rushed. It also builds resilience, reminding us that not every challenge requires an immediate solution.

Patience is especially important when working with people. Students need time to learn and mature. Staff members need encouragement and support as they grow professionally. Teams need time to build trust and cohesion. Even personal goals require consistency and persistence over time. Leaders who stay patient during the process often create environments where people feel safe to improve, take risks, and keep moving forward.

There is also a personal side to patience. Many people are far harder on themselves than they are on others. Growth, healing, leadership development, and success are journeys, not instant events. Patience allows us to give ourselves grace while still holding high expectations. It reminds us that progress is still progress, even when it feels slow.

One of the greatest challenges in leadership is balancing urgency with patience. Some situations require immediate action, but many require calm persistence. Patient leaders avoid making emotional decisions in temporary moments. They recognize that consistency, trust, and long-term vision often matter more than short-term reactions.

Patience also influences culture. Calm leadership creates calm environments. When leaders remain composed during stressful situations, others often follow their example. Patience reduces unnecessary conflict, strengthens communication, and encourages people to stay focused on solutions instead of frustration.

At its core, patience is about believing that the effort matters even before the outcome appears. Seeds planted today may not show growth tomorrow, but that does not mean growth is not happening beneath the surface. Great leaders understand that some of the most important work they do will not produce immediate recognition or results. Still, they continue showing up, investing in others, and trusting the process.

As you move through busy days and challenging moments, remember that patience is not weakness — it is strength under control. It is the ability to remain steady when circumstances tempt you to rush, react, or give up. In leadership and in life, patience often becomes the quiet foundation that allows lasting success to grow.

Three Takeaways:

  • Patience allows leaders to respond thoughtfully rather than react emotionally.

  • Meaningful growth in people, teams, and organizations takes time and consistency.

  • Calm, patient leadership creates stronger relationships, healthier cultures, and long-term success.

One Superintendent shared, "When we engaged RLR for the strategic planning process, I had high expectations and they exceeded every one of them. Their facilitation was thoughtful, well-structured, and deeply focused on authentic community engagement. Randy and Erich really integrated themselves into our community, as they successfully brought together diverse voices from across our district, creating a shared vision which I believe reflects our students, families, staff and partners. The result was not only a strong strategic plan, but a renewed trust, clarity, and agreement on our path forward. I highly recommend their work to any district seeking a strategic planning partner which reflects your community."

Who's In Your Inner Circle?

Who's In Your Inner Circle?
RLR Leadership Consulting and The CORE Project

Think about the people closest to you. The ones you share ideas with, lean on for support, and let influence your decisions. That group—your inner circle—shapes how you see yourself, the choices you make, and even the risks you’re willing to take.

Sometimes, those relationships give you energy and push you forward. Other times, they hold you back. That’s why RLR Leadership Consulting and The CORE Project have teamed up to create Your Inner Circle—an opportunity to pause, reflect, and intentionally shape the connections that matter most.

In this experience, you’ll:

  • Identify who truly belongs in your circle

  • Learn how to set healthy boundaries when needed

  • Build trust that actually lasts

  • Choose connections that make you stronger

Because the truth is, leadership isn’t just about strategy or skills—it’s about people. And the people closest to you can either empower your growth or limit your potential.

We’d love for you to join us. As a special opportunity, use code Randy15 for a discounted price—but hurry, this offer won’t last long.
